Since summer’s the time to be making the most of your backyard, barbecuing more often, and maybe you’re thinking your backyard could be more homely. You might even be considering redoing your deck or even adding to your existing deck.

As enticing as a wood deck might seem, there are many reasons to consider installing a composite deck. For one, many new city codes, particularly in rural districts forbid the addition of a wood deck and the extension of an existing deck because of fire hazards. The good news is that composite decks look like wood decks, without any of the drawbacks.

While not entirely maintenance free, composite decks have significantly less maintenance than wood decks because of the plastic integrated into them. However, if not sealed properly they can rot and decay just as easily and quickly as real decks. So while consistent maintenance isn’t a must, looking into the deck you’re purchasing and assessing the quality of it first is a wise decision.

Typically, composite decks are less expensive than wood decks too. And they can offer similar patterns and texture to be indistinguishable from real wood decks.

While not personally affecting you, it might be nice to know that composite decks are made from mostly recyclable components and don’t have nearly the affect on the environment that wood decks do.

For these reasons, you may want to consider adding composite decking instead wood if you’re looking to install a deck this summer.

Recently, we just finished a bathroom remodel. So, we just want to show off some of our work, but more importantly we wanted to take this opportunity to explain what some of the better features are of this new bathroom and how you can use this as a template for your bathroom remodel!

Here’s what the full bathroom looks like.

Let’s start at the back and work our way up. Those large windows serve as a great light source, which almost everyone loves because it gives you a realistic feeling of how you look in the real world after you’re done getting ready. They also manage to do so while adding ambiance with their wavy texture, which also maintains privacy in the room.

On the back of the wall, tile arranged in a subway fashion (which has been growing in popularity, lately) gives an eclectic feel to the bathroom, which ensures a high retail price when selling your home. A key question to ask whenever doing a remodel is “will this add value to my home when I sell it?”

Inside the shower, there is a large overhead shower head, perfect for taller folks and makes it easier to get a full body clean. Yet, on the wall there’s a detachable nozzle making it possible to shower however you please.

My favorite feature is the simple no-door glass wall separating the shower from the rest of the bathroom. For one, it makes getting in and out of the shower a breeze, but aesthetically it makes the bathroom feel larger and more open. And who doesn’t want a larger bathroom?

It’s hard to tell from the photograph (my apologies), but the washing station has “his and hers” sinks. Which doesn’t always seem like a big deal to some people, but saving an extra 20 minutes in the morning before work is always nice and it does tend to give partners a sense of more personal space. It definitely helps in retail too; I have seen people choose not to purchase homes largely because the master bath didn’t have a second sink.

That’s all we got for this room, but feel to check out more photos and comment.

For those who have ever considered putting in hardwood flooring or have put in hardwood flooring, finding the perfect floor to match your needs, decor, and budget is always a hassle. And if durability, variety and low costs are your bet, you might want to take a look at laminate flooring. No, this is not the same flooring from your kitchen in the ’70s. Laminate flooring in the past years has made strides making it comparable to and even better in many cases than engineered wood or real hardwood (which is barely a viable option for flooring anymore, considering price and availability).

Let’s start with what everyone’s looking at: price. Laminate flooring can cost about half the price of engineered wood, running about $3 per square foot whereas engineered wood can cost $6-$7 upward per square foot. More importantly, laminate is more likely to hold up over the years and is ideal for a home with pets, kids, or just a lot of traffic. Most even hold up well against water damage. However, if somehow the laminate flooring were to be damaged, a warranty should cover it. Most laminate flooring has warranties of 25 years and upward, and while engineered wood can even have warranties up to 25 years, more typical is a warranty around 10 or 15 years. Even more is that if you keep your flooring long enough to fall out of your warranty period, the ease of installing and replacing all or parts of laminate flooring makes do-it-yourself projects simple and installation costs down if you would rather pay for someone else to handle it.

But you’re thinking in getting all this, you have to settle for the poor appearance of laminate compared to that of engineered wood. Not true. Laminate flooring has become so well manufactured that it’s almost indistinguishable from engineered flooring. ( Don’t believe me? Next time you’re at your local hardware store, grab a few pieces of flooring and try to guess which is which). There is such a high variety in laminate flooring that you’re by no means limiting yourself in choosing laminate. Because of the easier production, laminate is actually holds more variety in sizing and comparable variety concerning tones and texture. There’s the classic piano finish for a classy high gloss flooring. Hand-scraped gives the wavy texture and imperfections of a hand-made plank for flooring, permitting a rural and rustic feel to a home. Ship deck appears and feels chipped and water-damaged to give a sense of an aged establishment. These and many finishes in-between give great variety of laminate to fit all tastes and styles.

While the simple name “laminate” holds many negative connotations, laminate has to come to compete admirably with engineered flooring. With value and reliability that laminate has to offer, it’s hard not to be impartial to what seems like the better option for all flooring needs.
